It forms part of the regional Nacala Corridor (Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique). Related corridor developments include road and rail upgrading in Malawi and Mozambique. A dry port (rail & road interconnection) at Chipata, Zambia is under consideration (pre- feasibility study is being funded by the EC). The road project Feasibility Study, Detailed Design and Tender Documentation has been funded by the EC (EDF9). The project cost is estimated to be up to EUR 250m. Implementation will be under the responsibility of the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ).

The ITF Grant of up to EUR 25m will be used to subsidise the interest rate of EIB's loan of EUR 80m to the GRZ.
