Extension of break-waters in the ports of Moroni and Mutsamudu and associated works taking advantage of existing infrastructure, so as to improve port operations and increase safety. Additional container storage through land reclamation will take place with dredged material. The separation of passenger services from freight will further improve operational safety in the two main ports. Facilities for the local fishing industry have also been incorporated in the expansion plans. Improvements in perimeter security, adoption of the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) code covering security standards to prevent acts of terrorism and the installation of port navigation equipment. The new facilities will also require the acquisition of new tug boats.

The EU-AITF grant from the Regional Envelope will be used to finance Technical Assistance for the preparatory phase of the project. A number of key elements need to be in place prior to the commencement of the TA.
