The project concerns the connection of Mauritania to ACE (Africa Coast to Europe), a new fibre optic submarine cable that is planned to connect about 20 countries along the Western Coast of Africa and Europe, between France and São Tomé and with a possibility of extension to South Africa. The project implementation will take place from 2010 and the connection is planned to be operational by mid 2012. International Mauritania Telecom (IMT) will be the Mauritanian participant in ACE and will locally operate the connection.
The ITF Grant will be used to subsidise the interst rate of EIB's loan to the Mauritanian State in order to respect the minimum concessionality level of 35% of grant elements agreed between IMF and Mauritania under the HIPC programme. EIB's loan will finance the 35% participation of the Sate of Mauritania into IMT.
