The project involves the rehabilitation of 208 km of road from Kagitumba through Kayonza to Rusumo. The road starts from Kagitumba (border of Uganda and Rwanda) on the Northern Corridor and ends at Rusumo on the Central Corridor (border with Tanzania). The contracts of works of the three were signed in december 2016, contractors are on ground, most of them completed site mobilisation stage, design review. Road works are ongoing and progress are but at different levels.
The Lot 1 were EU-AITF is involved was not yet started due to the supervision consultant issue on the contract and this was resolved by an amendment in July 2017.
The EU-AITF Investment Grant will be used for financing:- technical assistance (including the recruitment of a PFM International Expert (2 years), consultant to set-up a Road and Bridge Asset Management System, consultant to set-up a Road Accident Information System and consultant to conduct a study on the Road Maintenance Fund allocation formulae) capacity building T-SWAP, pipeline road studies and road safety audit components - civil works services of the Kagitumba- Bugaragara section (25km) of the Kagitumba-Bugaragarai section of the project road with possible using of the uncommitted fund/or savings to increase the length of the road and maximaze the socio economic impact. As at end June 2017, the rehabilitation works are underway and the recruitement of the T-SWAP is finalised. Procurement of other services are underway.
